Eternal Branding
Nature of Branding
Process: Branding can occur instantaneously, either passed down through family bloodlines or bestowed upon individuals at the whim of an Eternal. Those from branded lineages are often aware of their future status and receive training for this role. For others, branding can feel like an unexpected honor or an unwelcome burden, with reactions varying widely.
Symbolism: Brands appear similar to tattoos, each bearing the unique mark of the bonded Eternal. These marks appear on random parts of a bearer’s body, some visible and others easily concealed. In certain conditions, brands emit a faint glow, particularly when near specific materials.
Types of Powers Granted
Categories: The powers granted to a branded bearer are determined by their Eternal counterpart’s abilities. Powerful Eternals bestow stronger abilities, while weaker Eternals confer more limited gifts. Elements such as fire, water, wind, earth, and shadow, as well as complex powers like time, space, and material manipulation, all depend on the nature of the Eternal.
Physical Enhancements: Branded bearers also receive heightened physical abilities compared to ordinary mortals.
Eternal Sight: Brand bearers gain the unique ability to see all Eternals, not just the one they are bonded with.
Cost of Power: Unlike the near-infinite power of Eternals, branded bearers have limited reserves that deplete with use, similar to a “mana” system. Overusing abilities can lead to exhaustion and may even shorten the bearer’s lifespan. Over time, training and experience can expand these reserves, and bearers bonded with stronger Eternals start with larger reserves.
Relationship with the Eternal
Bond Strength: Stronger bonds allow bearers to access larger fractions of their Eternal’s power. Close cooperation between Eternal and bearer strengthens the bond, while defiance usually brings negative consequences. Some bonds are close, while others are distant or strained.
Communication: Brand bearers can communicate telepathically with their Eternal counterparts, though the intensity varies. Some bearers may struggle with constant mental contact, potentially leading to psychological strain or even madness.
Social Structure of the Branded
Hierarchy: Among mortals, bearers are often respected or feared based on their abilities, reputation, and the perceived nature of their Eternal. Stronger, more revered bearers command high regard, while others may be shunned, depending on their Eternal’s influence and disposition.
Societal Role: Branded individuals can serve as elite warriors, feared outcasts, or agents of factions or royalty. Their roles significantly impact the political and social structures of the world and the broader relationship between mortals and Eternals.
Consequences of Branding
Sacrifices: Excessive power use can shorten a bearer’s lifespan. Some bearers remain unaware of this limitation, while others live with restrictions imposed by their bond. Branding is involuntary, binding bearers to their Eternals without consent.
Breaking the Brand: Branding is lifelong. In rare cases, an Eternal may abandon or even eliminate their bearer, usually when they find a more “worthy” candidate. Brand bearers, once chosen, are bound to their fates, with no possibility of breaking the bond.
