Departure
The silence in the chamber was suffocating. It pressed against me, a thick, suffocating blanket, heavier than any storm I’d ever weathered.
Lumina sat beside me, her hand reaching out to touch my arm. Her grip was comforting, a grounding force in the maelstrom of my despair. "The riders returned," she said, her voice a hushed whisper. "They found…”
Words failed her, but I knew. The dread that had been gnawing at my insides since their departure solidified into a crushing certainty.
“Lysander?” I croaked, my voice hoarse from disuse.
Lumina nodded, unable to meet my gaze. “He’s gone.”
Sobs racked my body, scorching tears streaming down my face. My 13 year old child, my Lysander, slain by the hand of the Twilight King. The thought was unbearable, a nightmare made real. Just months ago, he was a vibrant twelve-year-old, strategizing with the young acolytes, his laughter ringing out in the courtyard as he wielded his flaming sword with a skill that belied his years, the Ashen Brand he bore burning bright. The memory of that moment seared my mind, only to be replaced by a wave of crippling nausea. Lysander's death wasn't just a tragedy – it was a brutal betrayal.
Grief threatened to consume me, but a cold, calculating fury burned within. Cindercor's name escaped my lips in a venomous whisper, laced with anguish. He had taken my son, corrupted him, twisted him into a tool, and ultimately led him down a path of destruction.
Cindercor had ensnared Lysander in a web of darkness, promising power and burdening him with responsibilities he was ill-equipped to handle. The incident at the Shrine of Cindercor, where this all began still haunted me – not just the loss of Kaelan, Lysander's friend, but the terrifying mix of power and sorrow that flared in Lysander's eyes as the flames consumed the young boy. In that moment, I saw the darkness Cindercor had sown within my son.
The memory of Kaelan's terror-stricken eyes, his screams slowly silenced by the inferno, would forever be etched in my mind. Cindercor, driven by a warped sense of justice, had condemned a twelve-year-old boy to death for daring to trespass on his sacred ground. He had ordered Lysander, my child, to execute his friend Kaelan.
That fateful night, Lysander unleashed a terrifying power, conjuring a sword of pure flame – a manifestation of Cindercor's influence, a twisted gift that marked him as a Brand bearer. It was the beginning of a descent into darkness, one that would ultimately lead him to Veridia, to the Twilight King, and to his demise.
As I prepared to journey to Veridia, my heart ached with a profound sense of helplessness. I couldn't bring Lysander back, but I could seek vengeance. I would find the Twilight King and make him pay for taking my son from me. Yet, additionally I must confront Cindercor – to make him answer for manipulating my son, driving him to madness, and ultimately leading him to his death. For Lysander, for Kaelan, and for all those Cindercor had hurt, I would seek justice.
For the moment, my attention was fixed on the Twilight King, the one responsible for my son's tragic demise.
Days ago, I had dispatched a small team of skilled and discreet agents to gather intelligence on the Twilight King and establish a strategic outpost. The thought of putting them in harm's way had weighed heavily on my heart, but now I yearned for any information that could shed light on how best to approach.
"Lumina," I said, my voice taking on a resolute tone. "Contact the scouts and instruct them to carry out the full scope of their mission. We require every detail about the Twilight King: his whereabouts, his plans, and his military strength. We need answers, and we need them immediately."
Lumina's aura pulsed with a fleeting display of emotions as she met my gaze. "Do you truly plan to confront this...King?" she asked, her voice laced with concern and a hint of awe.
"He took my child from me," I replied, my determination unwavering. "No matter the price, I will exact justice.
"I understand, Elara," Lumina said, her nod slow and deliberate. "But The Twilight King...he reigns over a realm of darkness.
"Then it seems he will have to learn the cost of crossing me," I whispered, a fierce spark igniting in my eyes. I refused to let fear paralyze me. Lysander's passing had left an unhealable scar, but it would not shatter me. Instead, it would fuel my resolve, honing it into a razor-sharp blade poised to strike down the Twilight King.
"Notify the scouts," I continued. "Upon arrival, I want their eyes scanning every inch, their ears attuned to every murmur. There will be no quarter in Veridia until the Twilight King falls."
Lumina's gaze remained steady as she nodded. "As you wish, Elara."
The passing days dissolved into an endless blur, each morning's light suffusing Aethelgard with an increasingly oppressive air. I prowled the stone floors of my council chambers, a captive bird of prey straining against the bars of its lavish prison. The need for answers gnawed at me. Every heartbeat echoed the haunting questions that shrouded the Twilight King.
"Have the scouts reported anything?" I asked Lumina, her luminous presence casting an ethereal dance of shadows across her features as she stood motionless beside me.
"Perhaps we're acting too rashly?" Lumina's voice was laced with trepidation, her words hesitant. "Aethelgard is exposed without your presence."
I turned to face her, my gaze unyielding. "My son lies entombed in the cold earth, while that abomination reigns supreme in Veridia. Can tranquility be found when darkness spreads unchallenged? Can Aethelgard truly be secure while the specter of the Twilight King looms?"
Lumina's sigh was accompanied by a faint dimming of her aura. "Your duty to Aethelgard is inescapable, Elara. But your son... you must be cautious. The pursuit of vengeance can corrupt even the noblest heart."
I met her gaze, a resolute determination hardening within me. "His death won't be avenged until a battle is won. But I won't allow it to consume me. The knowledge I seek is the only shield against the darkness within myself. The Twilight King must be stopped, not just for Lysander, but to restore peace to our neighboring lands."
Lumina's smile was tinged with worry, her eyes gentle. "Stay alive, Elara. Vengeance is a double-edged sword; don't let it devour you." Her gaze drifted to the intricate patterns etched into the floor, where flames danced in the hearth. "As long as I exist, Aethelgard will be safeguarded. I will hold the line."
"Your allegiance, like mine, is to Aethelgard," I said, a hint of stiffness creeping into my voice. She understood, of course. Our duty was to this land, its people, its very essence – a bond both sacred and unbreakable. Still, the thought of leaving her behind, entrusting Aethelgard's fate to her while I plunged headfirst into the heart of darkness... it was a burden I didn't relish.
Lumina placed a reassuring hand on my arm, her touch a warm comfort against my skin. "I've been gathering whatever intelligence I can. Whispers, myths, rumors... all fuel for the fire of understanding." Her gaze was sharp and focused. "Your scouts say Veridia's underworld whispers of the Twilight King's power, a presence more malevolent than any before. They speak of his blazing gaze, a brand upon his being that burns with an otherworldly light."
"And the Eternal?" I asked, my heart pounding in my chest. "Is there any news of the Eternal who granted him this power?"
Lumina’s brow furrowed, her studied expression mirroring the tension knotting my stomach. “Rumors swirl, Elara,” she said, her words measured and careful. “Some speak of an ancient forgotten eternal, a powerful being, banished but not destroyed.”
“A banished eternal,” I murmured, the implications heavy in the silence that followed.
“Indeed,” Lumina agreed, her gaze unreadable. “But identifying this eternal, or even confirming the truth of these whispers, is no easy feat.” She paused, her voice dropping to a near whisper. “The only certainty we have is that this Eternal’s intentions are anything but benevolent. He seeks power, influence, perhaps even dominion over Veridia itself.”
I clenched my jaw, the fire of vengeance burning bright within me. "Then we must stop him. Before he has the chance to consolidate his power."
I looked out the arched window, a pale spring moon casting silver streaks across the landscape. Beyond my vantage point, the vast expanse of land stretched towards Veridia, a hostile land shrouded in uncertainty. And somewhere out there, in the heart of that darkness, my son's killer lurked.
“I require every resource at our disposal,” I said, pivoting to face Lumina. “Every shred of intelligence you’ve gathered, every contact, every rumor worth investigating. The future of Veridia and Aethelgard hangs precariously in the balance.”
The flames danced in the hearth, casting a mesmerizing pattern of shadows on the stone walls of my chamber. I swept my hair back, securing it in its customary braid. My gaze, however, remained restless, darting repeatedly to the well-worn map of Veridia spread across my desk.
Leaving Aethelgard under the cover of night felt like tearing away a part of myself, a painful but necessary act. Guilt weighed heavily in my stomach. Aethelgard had always been my sanctuary, the land of my birth and legacy. The thought of abandoning it, especially with Lumina as its sole guardian, filled me with anguish.
“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn't believe it was crucial,” I murmured, more to myself than to Lumina, who sat across from me, her usual composure tinged with worry.
“There is nobility in your sacrifice, Elara,” she replied, her voice a calming solace to my frayed nerves. “Defending Aethelgard from external threats is a weighty responsibility, but one that I will shoulder with pride.”
The prospect of confronting my son’s killer, of facing the evil he embodied, sent a shiver coursing down my spine.
I hoped I wasn't walking into a massacre. Yet, the flame of vengeance burned fiercely within me. Aethelgard's safety, my sanity, and the fate of Veridia all hung in the balance of this perilous endeavor.
“The taskforce requires a strategic base of operations,” I continued, my voice firm with determination. “I’ve dispatched word to our scouts in advance. They need to establish a camp near Veridia’s border and be prepared for my arrival.”
The days that followed were a maelstrom of activity.
Alerting my scouts had been essential. They had to prepare for my arrival and secure a base of operations close to Veridia’s borders. Every moment felt heavy with anticipation, the air thick with the knowledge that this was no ordinary expedition. This was a journey into the very heart of darkness to confront a terror that had stolen my son and cast a shadow over my world.
I trained tirelessly, honing my skills and pushing myself to the limits. Each swing of my sword, each flicker of my radiant energy borrowed from Lumina's brand, was fueled by the need for retribution. It wasn't just about avenging Lysander, though his memory burned like a constant flame in my soul. This was about protecting Aethelgard, Veridia, my people.
Finally, the night of my departure arrived. I stood before the towering gates of Aethelgard, its familiar silhouette a poignant farewell. The wind whispered through the ancient trees, a mournful melody that echoed my own sorrow.
I drew a deep breath, released it slowly, and stepped forward. "It is time."
I turned my back on Aethelgard, the warmth of the torches behind me receding into the night. I could feel the weight of countless eyes upon me as I began to move towards my destination, towards a darkness that beckoned and threatened.
My journey had finally begun.
