The Heir of Aeraspire
A brief introduction to the world of the Eternal Bonds series.
Aeraspire is a magical place. Imagine islands floating high in the sky, like giant fluffy clouds. That’s what Aeraspire is made of, giant, beautiful floating islands. These islands are covered in trees that twinkle with a soft, inner light. Some trees even have leaves that sing sweet songs when the wind blows. We have amazing animals too, furry sky-otters that drift between the islands, and colorful birds with wings like stained glass.
My home island is the biggest. It’s called Lumina and it shines brightly because of beautiful crystals that glow with a soft light at night. Our homes are made of glass and glow too, making Lumina look like a giant, sparkling jewel in the sky.
Maybe you’ve seen us from far below on earth. We look like twinkling stars at night. That’s because our crystals reflect the light from the sun and moon.
My mama tells me that we are connected to a powerful, kind spirit named Aridia. She is the reason our island floats and our crystals shine.
“Aridia is the Eternal,” my mama says, her voice soft like the humming of the wind chimes that are everywhere on Aeraspire. “She watches over us and keeps us safe.”
My name is Evan. I’m eight years old and I live on Aeraspire. It’s kind of like a cloud city, only way prettier.
Mama says I’m the Radiant Scion, which means I’m gonna be the leader of Aeraspire when I grow up. It sounds important! I get special lessons and help pick the decorations for the festivals. But honestly, all that stuff kinda makes my head spin. Sometimes I just want to zip around Aeraspire on one of those sparkly winged birds like the other kids.
Yesterday, I was exploring our house. It's super big, even for someone like me, who's really good at hide-and-seek. I accidentally stumbled across a secret door in the library, hidden behind a bookshelf that looked older than my grampa! I pulled on the bookshelf, and with a creak, a whole wall slid open, revealing a dark room. A shiver ran down my spine, but I had to see what was inside.
The room was dusty and smelled like old paper and forgotten things. Moonlight streamed through a tiny window, making cobwebs glow like spooky silver threads. The whole place was filled with shelves crammed with dusty books and strange artifacts: weird-looking swords, gleaming helmets, and boxes filled with glowing crystals.
I cautiously reached out to touch one of the books. It was thick and worn, with a cover made of etched metal. When I opened it, strange symbols glowed faintly on the pages. I couldn't understand the words, but they looked important—like a secret language. There were pictures too, drawings of people with glowing marks on their bodies.
Suddenly, I remembered something Mama once said.
“Brand bearers,” she called them once, when we were talking about the history of Aeraspire. “People with special powers that came from an Eternal, like Aridia.”
I flipped through more pages, finding illustrations of those special powers. One page showed a person shooting fire from their hands. Another one showed someone controlling water with a flick of their wrist.
Wow! I thought. Fire and water? That’s so cool!
The book told me about Eternals – these super powerful beings who were kind of like gods, but not in a scary way! They could control things like fire, water, plants, even the wind and the stars!
And get this: Apparently, they pick special people called Brand Bearers to help them.
Imagine getting picked by a superhero to be their sidekick!
This book said that Eternals would choose someone they felt like working with. Then, they’d give them a special mark, like a tattoo, that connected them forever. It was called the Branding System.
The book had drawings of different marks. Some looked like swirls of smoke, others like glowing plants.
But this is what really got me: It said that each Eternal had a different kind of power. And the Brand Bearers got those powers too!
I sighed. So, I want a superpower like flying or invisibility. But would I get a cool one or maybe something weird like controlling worms or painting portraits with dirt?
I closed the book really slowly, my heart buzzing like a bumblebee in my chest. My mama called Brand Bearers “special people,” but this book said they were super powerful. Like, maybe even stronger than mama!
Thinking about my mom being a Brand Bearer made me wonder if that’s what my special lessons were all about. Maybe I was learning how to control something awesome, but I didn’t even know it yet!
There was something else that made my brain go all fuzzy. This book said, and I’m not making this up, that the Radiant Scion, which is me, was supposed to become a Celestial Regent.
A Celestial Regent?
My head spun!
Mama always said Aeraspire floated because of Aridia, the wind Eternal. She kept us safe, and made our crystals shine.
The book said that an Eternal could choose someone special, and give them a mark. That mark made them a Brand Bearer, and they worked together to help people.
Wait a minute…
The book said the Celestial Regent was chosen by Aridia to be her Brand Bearer!
Just like my mom!
The thought hit me like a strong gust of wind.
“I’m gonna be a Brand Bearer too!”
I slammed the heavy book shut. My mind was racing like a squirrel in a walnut shell. Brand Bearer? Me? Like Mama?
It was too much to think about.
Suddenly, the weight of everything felt heavy, like a giant elephant sitting on my chest. What if I wasn't strong enough? What if I messed everything up?
I walked over to the tiny window and looked out at the moonlit courtyard. Aeraspire looked so peaceful from here, but my tummy felt all twisty and knots.
"Mama?" I called out, my voice barely a whisper.
Mama came into the dusty room, her eyes filled with concern.
"What's wrong, Evan?" she asked, stepping towards me.
"I...I read something," I stammered, gesturing to the book on the table. "About the Radiant Scion...and Brand Bearers..." My voice trailed off.
Mama’s face softened, and she sighed. She sat down beside me, placing a hand on my shoulder.
"It's a big responsibility, isn't it?" she said quietly. "Being a Brand Bearer.
"It's kinda scary," I confessed, looking down at my scuffed boots. "What if I can't control the power? What if I hurt someone?"
Mama smiled understandingly.
"You won't know until you try, Evan," she said. "And besides, you won't be alone. If you're chosen by Aridia, she'll be there to guide you, to teach you.
"But what if I don't want to be a Brand Bearer?" I asked, my voice small.
"You can't avoid your destiny, Evan," Mama said sadly. "But that doesn't mean it's not okay to feel scared, or unsure. It's perfectly normal."
Mama was right. I knew that. It was just...scary.
Aeraspire was like one giant, dusty sandbox, full of tunnels and rooms. I loved exploring, even though Mama sometimes told me to stay out of the old parts of the palace.
One day, I went down a long, narrow tunnel I'd never seen before. It smelled musty and kind of smelled like rain. At the end, in a tiny alcove, was something sparkly.
I poked it with my finger. It was cold and hard like stone, but it glowed with this pale blue light. I'd never seen anything like it.
“Mama, look!” I yelled. I ran back as fast as I could, the crystal clutched in my hand.
Mama came rushing in, her eyes wide.
“Wow, Evan, where did you find that?”
I showed her the tunnel, but she shook her head.
“This is bad, Evan. This crystal…it’s ancient. It belongs to an evil Eternal.”
Mama’s face looked worried. She took the crystal from me and held it up. The blue light grew brighter, filling the room with an almost chilly light.
“This crystal is part of a scary story, Evan,” she said. “A very long time ago, another Eternal came to Aeraspire. He wasn’t like Aridia at all. He wanted to crash Aeraspire into the Earth below us”
“He wanted to crash Aeraspire into the Earth below us,” Mama finished, her voice barely a whisper.
I shivered. My mom was usually so calm, but the way she held the crystal made her look scared.
“What happened?” I asked, trying to make my voice steady.
Mama took a deep breath. “Aridia fought him,” she said, “and she hid this crystal. She was so strong, she banished him back to the nothingness he came from. That’s why there aren’t any memories of him, why no one knows about him. It’s a secret too dangerous to remember.”
Her words hung in the air. I stared at the crystal, the blue light pulsing like a heartbeat. The floor felt shaky beneath my feet. What else was Aridia hiding?
My hand twitched. I wanted to grab the crystal again, feel its coolness against my palm. But Mama’s grip on it was tight.
“Why are you only telling me this now, Mama?” I asked. “Why now?”
She looked at me, her eyes filled with a kind of sadness I’d never seen before.
“Because, Evan,” she said, “it’s time you knew the truth. About Aridia, about the dangers out there. It’s time you understood the weight of the Radiant Scion title. It’s more than just learning to control wind. It’s about protecting Aeraspire, protecting all of us.”
I held the crystal tight, my heart racing. Mama’s words echoed in my head like a drum. I knew I needed to help, but the weight of it felt heavy on my shoulders.
“Evan,” Mama said softly, breaking the silence. “You have to understand. When you become the Celestial Regent, there can only be one bearer of Aridia at a time.”
“What do you mean?” I asked, confused. My stomach twisted like a knot.
I took a deep breath and looked into Mama's eyes as she knelt beside me. "It means, Evan, that when you bear Aridia's Brand, you'll be doing so without me by your side. The connection between an Eternal and their bearer is powerful, but Eternals can only bond with one bearer at a time. When I'm gone, Aridia's Brand will be passed on to you, the Heir of Aeraspire." Her words hung heavy in the air, and I could feel the weight of the responsibility she was placing on my shoulders.
A lump formed in my throat. “So…you won’t be there?”
Mama nodded slowly. “When that day comes, I will have passed on.” Her voice wavered, but she kept her gaze steady.
I blinked hard, trying to keep tears from spilling over. It felt unfair that something so beautiful could come with such sadness.
Mama smiled gently with sadness in her eyes. “Yes, Evan. That’s why I want you to learn everything while I’m still here.”
I looked down at the crystal again. It sparkled brightly under the flickering light of the candles around us. It felt like a promise—a connection to something greater than myself.
But then came those quiet moments when fear crept back in—fear of losing her one day and fear of becoming someone new without her guidance. Each time I looked at the crystal or thought about Aridia’s Brand, those thoughts tugged at my heartstrings.
Yet as our training continued, I began embracing what being The Radiant Scion truly meant—a protector for Aeraspire, just like Mama has been all along.
